Hong Kook Kim (M'99-SM'01) received B.S. degree in Control and Instrumentation Engineering from Seoul National University, Korea in 1988. He then received both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Korea in 1990 and 1994, respectively.
As a Ph.D. candidate, he worked with Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. from 1991 to 1993, and Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) from 1993 to 1994, developing a voice dialing system for a digital keyphone and implementing algorithms for speech coding and speech synthesis.
From the middle of 1994 to 1998, he was a Member of the Technical Staff at SAIT, where he had developed speech coders operating at 4 kbit/s.
In December 1998, he joined AT&T Labs-Research, Florham Park, NJ, and he was a Senior Technical Staff Member with the Voice Enabled Services Research Lab.
In August 2003, he joined the Department of Information and Communications, at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) as an associate professor and since October 2008, he has been a professor at GIST.
His current research interests include speech analysis for wireless speech recognition and coding, audio coding and 3D audio, robust speech recognition in noisy environments, and embedded algorithms and solutions for speech and audio processing for handheld devices.
